![]() The master key is not something most players will necessarily experience, and the game was designed around not having it rather than having it. Yeah, I wasn't taking the DLC into account. I think if you only mean the base games I could see that being true.Įdit: Also it probably depends on whether you're assuming the player uses master key, which makes quite a few more bosses optional. I don't think that's true, but only because of the DLC which Dark Souls 2 hasn't really been given a chance to release yet. Probably just a personal design preference.ĭS2 also has tons of optional stuff compared to DS1 The reverse is true for the second half of both games, and given Dark Souls more cohesive map design I'm inclined to favor that sort of map design. ![]() The first half of DS1 is quite railroady compared to the first half of DS1.Īgain, that's true. You could go into New Londo and into the Catacombs, but you would never see their respective ends until being done with anor londo. ![]() Although I would also argue that these areas are not as cohesive of a map as Dark Souls 1, though I could see how people would favor more options over cohesive maps. That is only at the start of the game, once you are done with Heide and FoTFG the game starts diverging far more than DS1 ever did.Īfter you get out of those initial areas, yeah I completely agree. The game had to rely heavily on map navigation to lead the player to the goals for the first major portion of the game (although anyone who has ever been lost in DkS will tell you that isn't exactly a benefit). Dark Souls couldn't do that since the Lordvessel wasn't given to the player until major progress had already been made. Dark Souls 2 seems to be much more oriented towards the whole: Reach area destination > Return to Majula by teleporting through bonfire. ![]() All of these areas connected back to the others, so the playthrough would feel have an organic and natural progression as you make it to the new areas regardless of where you initially chose to go. You could also take the masterkey and just go straight into Blighttown or Darkroot basin right after the Asylum. In Dark Souls you had a variety of options on where to go (Catacombs, Burg, New Londo) even though the difficulty was obviously not uniform. Really it's just a lack of map path options.
